10 Great Ways to Get Hours for The 10,000 Hours Show
1. Jaycees Field of Screams
Volunteers are needed on October 24th, 30th, and 31st to scare visitors as they make their way through the maze. Shifts are from 6pm – midnight and rides are provided out to the field. Contact Maria Meller at maria.meller@bankofthewest.com if you’re interested in helping.
2. Make a Difference Day
Volunteers are invited to come out to Terrill Mill Park on October 24th from 1 - 4pm to remove trash from the park and Mayflower Residence Hall. The park is accessible by cambus. You will be working outside so please dress appropriately - Closed-toe shoes, pants, and long-sleeves.
3. Run/Walk the Zeta Tau Alpha 5K
Once again, the ladies of ZTA are hosting their 5K run/walk to benefit breast cancer research. The race is on Sunday, October 25th at 11:30. Sign up at http://zta5k.racesonline.com/ run/walk and support this great cause!

5. Creepy Campus Crawl
Help with various family-friendly activities at the UI Museum of Natural History's annual Halloween party! Volunteers are needed on Friday, October 30th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, but volunteers are also needed throughout the day. Volunteers can serve as guides, and help kids with activities like making their own cave paintings, navigating a "spooky tour," playing games to learn about Tyrannosaurus Rex, identifying invasive species, and more. Volunteers are encouraged to dress up in costumes, but this is not required. Contact Sarah Horgen at sarah-horgen@uiowa.edu or 319 335 0606 if you’re interested.
6. Trick or Treating for UNICEF Boxes
Downtown Iowa City businesses were asked to put UNICEF collection boxes in their stores. On November 1, we plan to “Trick-or-Treat” for UNICEF by dressing up and collecting the boxes from the participating businesses downtown and also to collect donations in the ped mall from 12-3pm. We will have a mandatory informational meeting Sunday, November 25 at 5pm in the Iowa United Nations Association office in the Old Brick for those who are interested.
7. The Arc’s “Show of Shows”
The Arc is putting on a talent show and dinner on Saturday, November 7th from 4 pm-8 pm at the Hope United Methodist Church. Volunteers are needed to help with general tasks at the event. The only requirement is a positive attitude and smiles. Contact Sheba Francis at shebafrancis@iowatelecom.net if you’re interested in this opportunity.
8. Provide Childcare during Kirkwood Elementary’s Parent-Teacher Conferences
Kirkwood Elementary will be hosting Parent Teacher Conferences on November 12th, 13th, and 19th. They are looking for energetic, fun, and responsible volunteers to provide childcare for parents while they attend a conference with their child's teacher. Activities will be provided for the kids to do. They just need people to help supervise and play with the kids! CEP Mission: The Civic Engagement Program prepares students for community leadership and citizenship. In doing so, the CEP helps connect students, faculty members and staff with communities, responds to community needs and opportunities, and serves as a portal to the University for community organizations seeking student involvement.
CEP Vision: The Civic Engagement Program is a well-recognized and energetic portal that actively promotes students' life-long citizenship and learning through service, enhances public engagement scholarship, and strengthens vital community partnerships. The CEP is a bridge that connects the campus and communities for the common good.

Promoting a life-long commitment to citizenship, leadership, and community involvement as part of the UI student experience. Encouraging and helping promote student philanthropic efforts. Networking with campus and community groups to increase engagement opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Developing a regional and national reputation for increasing service learning and student volunteerism through best practices for campus and community partnerships. Capitalizing on benefits and resources available through the University of Iowa's membership in Campus Compact.
History:
The Civic Engagement Program (CEP) was established in 2005 as a collaborative initiative
between the UI Vice President for Student Services and the UI Provost, and works to the mutual benefit of the campus and larger community.
In 2009, the Civic Engagement Program joined the Pomerantz Career Center because of the strong connection between volunteering and career exploration and career development.
