The 10,000 Hours Show of Eastern Iowa Service Recognition Policy

After reading the information below, apply here for 3-hour credit.

If you have any questions on this policy, please contact nonprofits@10000hoursei.org

The 10,000 Hours Show is made possible through a year-round effort by a volunteer staff, community and campus advisors, and non-profit organizations.  However, the concert, and ultimately, the service would not be completed without several hundreds of volunteers getting involved in their community. 10K wants to recognize your service as a University entity to the greater Eastern Iowa community.

While The 10,000 Hours Show encourages all types of volunteering—tutoring a child, raking leaves for your neighbor, serving free lunch—10K makes a distinction as to what type of volunteer service fully represents its mission:

“We believe that volunteerism is the cornerstone of any community. Through volunteerism citizens find purpose and personal connections, communities fill considerable needs, and students learn through practical experience. The 10,000 Hours Show mobilizes young people to help meet those immediate community needs through volunteering at local  nonprofits and helps develop the next generation of active community leaders. We seek to recruit new and existing volunteers into a continued life of service and civic responsibility.”

With that as a background, The 10,000 Hours Show will recognize events which:
• Are served at or through a local nonprofit organization,
• Reach a greater community audience outside the UI, or
• Connect students to off-campus local needs

3 Hour Policy FAQ
Q: I am a volunteer member of a student organization here at Iowa. Do I receive hours merely for my participation (e.g. meetings, reports, etc) in that organization?
A: No. Only approved hours served at community-based events made possible through your student organization will be awarded.

Q: How many hours will each volunteer receive if they participate in such an event?
A: The maximum number of hours awarded for each event will be three hours.

Q: I volunteer several hours over the course of my week for my student organization. I volunteer, why shouldn’t I receive 10K hours for my service?
A: 10K promotes all types of volunteering and encourages you to stay involved on campus. Yet 10K was founded to promote service outside that of merely serving as a member of a student organization. We want all students to feel connected to the greater community and that somehow, through their service, make it a better place to live in for everyone, not just students.

Q: I have an event that sounds like it would qualify for 10K hours. How do I ensure my volunteers get their 10K hours?
A: Great! 10K wants to make this process as simple as possible, so you can meet your volunteer need and we get more people to the concert in Iowa City. An organization representative will need to fill out the appropriate form online in order for your event to be considered for credit. This must be done at least 2 weeks in advance (some exceptions will be granted). If your event qualifies, a 10K staff member will follow-up with additional logistics (i.e. how to verify hours, etc).

Events that would be recognized on an hour—by-hour basis (no maximum):
Your Greek Chapter helps build a house for Habitat for Humanity. These hours would be logged with the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter.
Your Residence Hall Floor spends an afternoon playing with children on the pediatrics floor at the hospital. These hours would be logged with the local hospital.

Events that would qualify for the 3 hour policy:
Your organization sponsors a clothing/food drive in order to solicit donations for a local organization.
Your organization puts on a benefit concert downtown to which community members participate in and are invited to.

Events that would not qualify for the 3 hour policy:
You hold a meeting to discuss the layout of a newly created flyer for your
organization.
You need volunteers to run a bake sale to send your organization to a national
conference.

Each application is subject to approval from The 10,000 Hours Show Board of Directors. We reserve the right to deny credit to any application that we feel does not fit with our mission.

If your event is approved, we will notify the agency’s principal representative with further information on how to log the hours. Hours approval is contingent upon submission of a list of participants being submitted to us no later than one week after the event.
